Meet a 2023 VIP: Diana Rodriguez

Diana Rodriguez, a diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) consultant at the Cedar Rapids Alliant Energy headquarters, is known among her co-workers for her incredible commitment to serving others.

“Diana is always sharing volunteer opportunities with our HR team and encouraging everyone to participate,” said Jenna Bates, who works with Rodriguez and nominated her for a Values in Practice award. “When I think of our value of ‘Care for others,’ I think of Diana. She never meets a stranger and is always lending her time and talents.”

Rodriguez is currently on the board of directors for United Way of East Central Iowa, and especially active in their DE&I initiatives. Most recently, she also accepted a position on the board of YPN , a nonprofit dedicated to supporting families in Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas.

“YPN’s mission is to focus on empowering families and impacting generations,” Rodriguez said. “That’s something I strive to do in my volunteer work whether it's with United Way of East Central Iowa, YPN or other opportunities to give back.”

In each organization, board members are responsible for determining how and where to allocate funds; what programs and services are provided in the community.

“Both of these boards ensure our community needs are being met – needs such as physical, mental and social well-being, education and economic stability,” Rodriguez said. “Being on the board of a nonprofit organization means you tackle the root causes of the most complex challenges while making a positive impact; this is no easy task. These are essential services for individuals and families to thrive and build a sustainable future in resilient communities.”

Community and service have always been an important topic in Rodriguez’s life. Her parents are immigrants who came to the United States with very little knowledge about the culture and did not speak English.

“Because of the kindness and compassion of an individual who taught my dad English, he was able to find work, obtain his driver’s license, support his family and eventually became a U.S. citizen,” Rodriguez said. “The growing population of immigrants, like my dad, led to a nonprofit organization, the Catherine McAuley Center which serves immigrants, refugees and women in crisis. This is a true example of the strategic partner agencies United Way of East Cental Iowa funds and how they evolve to fit the needs of our community.”

“I believe giving back is important not just for the civic engagement and leadership, but for the generational impact. I believe if you take a close look, you can see the influence of your generosity, whether it’s your time, talent or treasure, on our friends, family and neighbors.”

Alliant Energy recognizes Diana Rodriguez with a Values in Practice (VIP) award, an honor that celebrates employees who donate time and energy to the communities Alliant Energy serves.

All 2023 VIPs will receive a $500 grant to donate to the nonprofit of their choice. The company thanks Diana and the other VIPs for how they act for tomorrow, do the right thing, make things better and care for others – the very values that shape everything Alliant Energy does.
