Launching an interest in STEM for Ottumwa area youth

A model rocket launch at the Wapello County 4-H Expo on July 15, 2023, was made possible by Alliant Energy. The project was an exciting way to get Ottumwa area youth involved in science, technology, engineering and math.

Around 3:30 p.m., adults helped team members set up rockets on launch pads and return to the safe zone for countdown.

Then the rockets sailed into the sky, some high enough to be lost to sight before slowly parachuting back to the ground. Several survived the first launch and were re-equipped with new engines for a second. At least one rocket blasted off three times.

The launch was the culmination of several weeks of instructional workshops for Ottumwa area youth in grades 4-12. During the workshops they learned how to build model rockets and understand the science behind them. The kids worked in teams to assemble rockets from kits. Team members personalized their rockets with paint and decorative decals. Older team members served as captains, supporting younger members, and adults were always on hand to assist.

“The funding provided by Alliant Energy allowed the 4-H Expo board to give our kids an educational experience that was also fun,” said Duane Bass, 4-H Expo board member. “We were able to purchase Estes model rocket kits in varying styles and complexities, so that all participants, regardless of age and grade level would be accommodated.”

With its strong commitment to STEM and workforce readiness, Alliant Energy was proud to support Wapello County 4-H’s 2023 model rocket launch event, an opportunity for kids to learn and have a blast.
