Simple things your business can do today to save energy

Optimize lighting

  • Turn off lights when not in use and use natural lighting when available. Upgrade to occupancy sensors in interior spaces.
  • Install LED light bulbs wherever possible. Consider an upgrade from T12 tubes to more efficient T8 fluorescent lamp tubes.
  • Paint walls bright colors to reflect light. You’ll be less likely to over-light your facility.
  • Install ENERGY STAR-qualified exit signs.
  • Use timers for security lights and outdoor lighting.
  • Insulated blinds and shades reduce heat gain and loss.

Comfortable yet energy-efficient heating and cooling systems

  • Invest in a smart, programmable thermostat.
  • Use ceiling fans correctly to improve circulation. Rotate fans counterclockwise in the summer to push cooler air down, and clockwise in the winter to keep warmer air from rising.
  • Check windows and doors for drafts and seal any air leaks.
  • Seasonally tune-up HVAC equipment. Change filters and clean coils to improve air quality and keep air flowing efficiently.

Reduce energy and water waste

  • Upgrade to smart power strips with timer and motion detection features.
  • Utilize built-in power down or sleep-mode features for office equipment.
  • Unplug appliances such as toasters and coffee pots when not in use.
  • To keep your office refrigerator efficient, clean the coils and check seals.
  • Install low-flow faucet aerators on sinks in kitchen and bathrooms and fix any leaks.

Involve employees

  • Let employees know you are increasing your efforts to save energy and that small behavior changes can make a big difference.
  • Share basic energy saving tips with staff and post a checklist.
